Typography Composition

This is my typography composition. I used the letter "K" to create what I call "Kreepy Woods". My artistic process was considering what letter could make for a unique design. I tilted K's and used tree textures on them as well. The K's were meant to be the trees as I felt the lines that make up the K look like branches. I used the brush tool to create the leaves of the trees as well as some of the grass. I also made the bird nest using the brush tool. The back layer of the grass was a brush to fill up some of the open blackness on the bottom. Due to the nature of how I did the trees, no filter was visible on it, so the background, nest, and tree hollow received one. I put a purple and black gradient over the entire thing to create a more gloomy feel. As a touch, I used different fonts for K and changed the color of the trees according to how close to the front they were (i.e. the front-most K is a deep brown while the furthest back one is a grayish-brown). My strongest area was aligning and coloring the K's in the background and my weakest area was creating darkness. These two areas actually both involve color, but my weak area is only about shading and contrast. I believe the unique idea makes my image strong because I always like creating environments to improve my creative muscles for my own purposes and I clung onto the forest idea the second it came to me. Another thing that makes my image strong would be the trees themselves, but I found it difficult to create a texture on the trees and leaves. Despite its look, I'm not particularly happy with them. A third thing that makes my image strong is the mood conveyed by the colors to create gloom because dark woods are one of my favorite environments to make, so I pride myself in making the mood correct. I could make it stronger if I had more in the shadows but it already was getting far too complex for me. I also think it could be stronger if the colors had more shading within them because I feel the colors are too basic. A third thing that could make it stronger is add more forest scenery as all I could think to do was a bird nest. I believe my effort was great as I stuck to my idea that was greatly thought over and considered. I truly gave it my all, but I wish I knew more skills to make it better. I hope it is pleasing to your eyeballs.

  1. The scene is very easy to follow, as in it isn't "Dead Center" and the scene guides the eye around it, which is always a good thing. Color choice is spot-on for the composition and mood of the scene. One thing that could be improved is shading and highlighting. The trees seem very flat because of this. However, I like the piece. I look forward to seeing more from you :)

  2. I love the layers that you used to create a sort of fog of shadow, giving the image depth. The use of the letter is very smart and creative, I like how you really worked with the shape of the letter to form this forest. Textures add a nice feel to the letter, making the letters seem less like the letter and more like tree trunks. The one thing that you could work on is the hole in the front tree. I think it is a nice touch but it stands out a little, if you found a way to have it fit on the tree better, it would improve the look of the image.

  3. Try brightening this up a tad. If I go to print it, it will print even darker.
